Frequently asked questions
Why does a doubles game start at 0-0-2?
The side that serves first only gets one server in its first turn, so the game starts as if the first server has already been used. After the first side out, both partners serve in every turn.
What do the three numbers mean?
Serving side's score, receiving side's score, then server number (1 or 2). So 5-3-2 means the serving side has 5, the receivers have 3, and the second server is serving.
Which side do I serve from?
In doubles the server switches sides with their partner after every point their side wins, and the first server after a side out is whoever is on the right. In singles you serve from the right when your score is even and from the left when it is odd.
When do we switch ends?
Between games, and in the deciding game when the first side reaches 6 points (8 in a game to 15, 11 in a game to 21). The board reminds you.
Assumptions and sources
- Traditional side-out scoring: only the serving side scores a point. Games to 11, 15 or 21, win by two.
- In a best of three, the side that served first in a game receives first in the next one.
